Most senior CVs we review describe the job, not the person who did it. “Responsible for”, “managed”, “oversaw”. A hiring leader reads that and still does not know what changed because you were there.
Responsibilities tell them the job. Impact tells them why to hire you.
Every candidate on a shortlist has held a similar role. What separates you is evidence: the scale you operated at, the decisions you owned and the results you delivered. That is what a CEO or board member looks for in the first 30 seconds.
Illustrative example. Always use your own real, provable numbers.
A simple formula for every bullet
- 1Action: what you personally did. Use “led”, “built”, “turned around”, “negotiated”, not “was involved in”.
- 2Scale: team size, budget, revenue, users, countries, number of programmes.
- 3Result: the measurable outcome. Growth, savings, speed, quality, risk reduced.
- 4How (optional): one short phrase on the approach, if it shows judgement.
Where to find your numbers
Money
Budget owned, revenue grown, costs saved, deals closed.
People
Team size, leaders developed, successors in place, attrition reduced.
Delivery
Programmes delivered, time saved, users adopted, service levels improved.
Risk
Audits passed, incidents reduced, compliance achieved.
If figures are confidential, use percentages, ranges or relative terms: “cut cost to serve by a fifth” still proves impact without revealing sensitive data.
Your CV is not a record of what you were asked to do. It is proof of what you made happen.
