One or two sentences. You do not owe anyone your full personal story.
Honest
Say what it was, simply. Vague answers invite more questions.
Forward-looking
Move quickly to why you are ready now and what you bring to this role.
A simple three-part answer
- 1What it was. One sentence, no apology. “I took 12 months out to support a family relocation.”
- 2What you kept sharp. Only if relevant: a qualification, advisory work, a project, staying close to your sector.
- 3Why you are ready now. Link straight to the role. “I am now fully focused on returning to a transformation leadership role, and this programme is exactly the kind of challenge I do best.”
Illustrative wording. Use your own words so it sounds natural.
On your CV and LinkedIn
Show the gap as one clear line with dates, for example “Career break: family relocation”. Do not leave an unexplained hole for the reader to fill in. LinkedIn also lets you add a career break to your experience section, so both stories match.
What to avoid
- Over-explaining. Long answers sound defensive.
- Apologising. A break is not a failure.
- Sharing more than you want to. You can keep personal or health details private.
- Letting the gap lead. Your achievements should still be the headline.
A career gap is a line on your CV, not the headline. Say it once, say it confidently, and move to what you deliver.
