Prepare six stories, not sixty answers
Most senior interview questions can be answered with a small set of strong, well-prepared stories:
- A turnaround or recovery you led
- A difficult stakeholder you brought on side
- A decision you made with incomplete information
- A team you built or transformed
- A significant change you delivered
- A failure, and what you learned
How to tell each story
- 1Set the scene in two sentences. The situation and what was at stake.
- 2Name the decision you owned. This is the part most candidates skip.
- 3Explain what you did. Say “I”, not “we”, for your part.
- 4Give the result in numbers. Revenue, time, cost, adoption, people.
- 5Close with the lesson. What you would repeat and what you would change.
Do not forget your own questions
Strong questions show strategic thinking. Ask what success looks like in the first year, what has stopped progress so far and how the board measures this role. The answers also tell you whether the role is right for you.
The CV gets you into the room. The story behind your results gets you the offer.
