Five things to assess before you say yes
- 1The role. What is the mandate, who do you report to and what decisions will you actually own? A big title with limited authority is a common disappointment.
- 2The employer. How stable is the business and its funding? What is its reputation with senior hires who joined before you?
- 3The package. Look at how it is split: basic salary, housing, transport, schooling, flights, medical cover and bonus. Ask exactly how your end-of-service gratuity will be calculated.
- 4Relocation support. Temporary accommodation, shipping, visas for your family and help settling in all make a real difference in the first months.
- 5Your family. School places and fees, your partner’s career, healthcare for dependants and how often you will travel home.
Questions most candidates forget to ask
- What is the probation period, and what happens at the end of it?
- How much notice is required on both sides?
- Are there any restrictions on working for competitors afterwards?
- How are annual increases and bonuses decided?
